Review: Three Little Superpigs by Claire Evans

9781338245455
$17.99
Available July 31, 2018

After defeating the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Superpigs spend their days fighting crime and enjoying their newfound fame. But one day, the Big Bad Wolf escapes from prison and plunges Fairyland into fear. Our curly-tailed friends soon discover that bricks are missing all over town. The Superpigs return to their homes to solve the mystery when they realize it has all been a trap!

At home we have been working our way through all the Marvel movies, so it makes perfect sense to us that the villain in a story might not stay defeated (seriously, Loki? Again??) Indeed, the beginning of this 'sequel' is much like the beginning of Iron Man 2 - without the whole testifying-before-Congress bit. It is not without jet-powered flight, though!

Definitely one for the younger set, adults will find too many things implausible for even a picture book, but kiddos will enjoy feeling smarter than the Superpigs as they spot the wiley wolf. The bright colors and cameos from familiar fairy tale characters will keep those younger readers' attention. Not a must-have, but one that will check out with some regularity if you have it on the shelves.

Review: The Princess and the Frogs by Veronica Bartles and Sara Palacios

Love me a well-done fractured fairy tale!

9780062365910
$17.99

The cover grabbed me right away - now here is a princess we can all relate to! Her sense of style reminds me of a certain princess in my own household, too.

Princess Cassandra wants a pet to be her friend - one who will jump and play and swim with her, and preferably one who matches her favorite green dress. A frog, of course, is a perfect fit, and everything is going great - until she kisses him goodnight. Now he is a prince! And he wants to marry her, too - no thanks! She tries frog after frog, but each time she kisses them good night, the same thing happens. What's a princess to do?

Young readers will enjoy the silliness, and I commend Palacios for managing to make each frog (and each prince) look completely different. This one is sure to make it into my story time line-up - after I take it home for a while first!

Goldilocks and the Three Brothers

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks.

Well, that wasn’t really her name, but look at these curls!

Goldilocks had three crazy brothers:

Christopher

Logan

And Baby Shane. (Baby Shane wasn’t born yet).

They were always getting into trouble, and Goldilocks was always having to rescue them!

One time, Christopher was attacked by evil villains.

Goldilocks captured them all, and made Christopher a bacon sandwich so he would feel all better.

Another time, Logan got wrapped up by a giant spider.

Goldilocks set him free, and made him a bacon sandwich.

When it was time for Baby Shane to be born, he had to stay in the hospital for a little while.

Everyone was sad, because they wanted him to come home.

So, guess what Goldilocks did?

That’s right! His very first bacon sandwich.

And, it worked – Baby Shane got to come home, so everybody could help Goldilocks look out for him.

But, a sister’s work is never done, so Goldilocks knew to keep plenty of bacon on hand!
