Cybils Time!

Almost better than Christmas - the short lists for the Cybils awards have been announced! For those not familiar with the Cybils awards: there are many, many book awards out there, some more well-known than others. Some judging panels look more at literary merit than reader appeal, while others are chosen entirely by young readers, and don't take the writing skill so much into account.

 

There is certainly a place for both, but the reason I so look forward to the Cybils is that judges on each panel are instructed to look at both. Yes, it's well-written, but will its intended age group enjoy it? Coming from a librarian's pov, will it fly off my shelves and make me happy to see kids reading it?

 

The judges for the first round panels have multitudes of books to consider, so when they narrow those down to a half dozen or so, you know they are going to be the cream of the crop - and that's when I start ordering! Head over to the 2012 short lists now to see what they chose, and rest assured that they will all be on our shelves here soon.
