Almost better than Christmas - the short lists for the Cybils awards have been announced! For those not familiar with the Cybils awards: there are many, many book awards out there, some more well-known than others. Some judging panels look more at literary merit than reader appeal, while others are chosen entirely by young readers, and don't take the writing skill so much into account.
There is certainly a place for both, but the reason I so look forward to the Cybils is that judges on each panel are instructed to look at both. Yes, it's well-written, but will its intended age group enjoy it? Coming from a librarian's pov, will it fly off my shelves and make me happy to see kids reading it?
The judges for the first round panels have multitudes of books to consider, so when they narrow those down to a half dozen or so, you know they are going to be the cream of the crop - and that's when I start ordering! Head over to the 2012 short lists now to see what they chose, and rest assured that they will all be on our shelves here soon. Then head over here to check out the titles we already have:

Wow, I have no idea why they are all staggered, they didn't look that way in the preview - and I am too lazy to go in and change spacing.
ReplyDeleteI loved the staggering, and wondered how you got it to do that ... thought you did it on purpose to liven up the page ;)
DeleteIf you didn't catch my post on "the ones that got away," I would definitely order Frog and Fly by Jeff Mack. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI did see that, and I'll be getting all those, too! We hav ethe invisible inkling book, but I hadn't read it yet - that's my plan for lunch hour tomorrow:)
